In our digital world, there is no shortage of motivational "rags to riches" stories imploring us to chase our dreams.

In one I saw a while ago, Steve Harvey tells the story of how he went from having $35 and sleeping in his car on a Friday to winning the Apollo talent competition on Sunday. Because of that win, Steve went on to become the host of Showtime at the Apollo. That job ultimately led to Steve's fame, fortune, and success.

These stories, while inspiring, sometimes gloss over the nuanced battles women of color face when contemplating a career pivot.

For us, starting over isn't just about the fear of the unknown. It's about wrestling with layers of oppression and internalized messages telling us that we should be content with what we have and that our dreams might be too ambitious or unconventional.
