My first place was a one-bedroom condo I purchased a couple of years after law school. Like many new homeowners, I was eager to make it my own: painting walls, upgrading fixtures, and considering furniture options.
During this time, my neighbor suggested I meet with a home security system salesman. It seemed like a good idea because I was a single woman living alone.
However, from the moment I opened the door to the salesman and his technician, something felt off. The salesman launched into a rapid-fire pitch while his tech began drilling holes and installing equipment without my permission.
It was disconcerting. I felt like I was being pushed down a path without my brain catching up to which direction I was heading.
Despite my discomfort, I didn't stop the salesman or the installation. Instead, I allowed doubt to creep in.
